Learn how we incorporate denim into our upcycled creations
Denim is a fabric that transcends time and trends, it has a rich history that spans centuries that we can’t really put a date on. Have you wondered how denim went from sturdy workwear, to serve as a symbol of youth culture rebellion to being an essential fabric that could be eco-friendly?
In this post, we invite you to embark on a journey taking you through the evolution of denim while exploring its earliest recorded usage as a fabric forged into statement pieces for everyday use. Its association with rugged labor and its remarkable transformation into a symbol of style and sustainability.
THE ORIGIN OF DENIM
According to reports, denim was first used in the late 18th century when it was first woven in Nîmes, France. It was a fabric originally called “serge de Nîmes”. The term “denim” originated from this phrase, highlighting its place of origin.
Initially, denim was used for making sails and workwear due to its durability and resistance to wear and tear. Its exceptional durability made it the fabric of choice for miners, laborers, and cowboys who needed robust clothing to withstand demanding conditions. The invention of rivets by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis further enhanced denim’s strength, leading to the birth of the iconic blue jeans.
From Workwear to Fashion Statement:
In the mid-20th century, denim made its way from the realm of workwear to the world of fashion. Hollywood heroes and heroines flaunt denim on the silver screen, films featuring rugged cowboys and rebellious characters popularized denim, making it a symbol of coolness, individuality, and nonconformity.
Thanks to cultural icons like James Dean and Marlon Brando, denim jeans became a symbol of rebellion and youthful rebellion. Suddenly, it wasn’t just about getting the job done—it was about making a fashion statement.
Over time, denim began to transcend societal boundaries, becoming a versatile and timeless fashion choice embraced by people of all ages and backgrounds.

THE SHIFT TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE FASHION AND DENIM UPCYCLING
As denim’s popularity soared, so did the environmental impact of its production. Traditional denim manufacturing involves large amounts of water, energy, and harmful chemicals, contributing to pollution and water scarcity. The fashion industry’s overconsumption and fast fashion culture further exacerbated the negative effects on the environment.
As the fashion industry started addressing the environmental impact of fast fashion, denim emerged as a sustainable choice. Upcycling denim became a popular practice, breathing new life into old jeans, reducing textile waste, and minimizing the environmental footprint of the fashion industry.
At AZACH, we’ve mastered the art of transforming discarded denim into stylish bucket hats, tote bags, jackets, skirts, and pants. It’s our way of embracing a circular economy and treading lightly on the planet.
